REGULAR BROWSING

The goal of this project was to create a secure browser in a VM, yet have it look and feel like a native application. Use it just like you would any other web browser. Furthermore, these applications are restricted to running in a VM which protects information that you have on the host OS from any unknown malware. If you don't want it shared with the world, then the browser VM doesn't get access to it unless you allow it. It's that simple.

A few things you should know are:
  • If you didn't run the "Start Downloads Sharing.bat" in windows, or haven't setup a "$ChromeVM" samba share, then you will NOT be able to download and save files to the host OS.
  • This browser does not support printing just yet.
  • Full screen video's on Youtube and Hulu are really choppy. Regular video size is fine.
  • Flash ADs take up a lot of resource at times. Bad AD code.

Other than the items listed above, it'll do just about everything else really well.



ANONYMOUS BROWSING

If you haven't surfed the Internet anonymously before, then their are PRIVACY issues you need to know about.
  • Always use HTTPS over HTTP whenever possible.
  • If you want to remain anonymous, don't use your name, address, phone number, or e-mail while being anonymous.
  • If you do have to send any personal information, make sure it is encrypted or you are using HTTPS.
  • Even though your IP address is masked, people can still figure out who you are based on what information you share with the world. Think before you share.
  • Do not login to your finacial institution, bank, or Paypal using an anonymity system. Most of these places detect the sudden change in geographical location and may freeze your account as a security measure.

Traditionally, the use of browser plugins and third party applications while using an anonymity system are discourage do to security concerns about one's anonymity and/or privacy. This is not the case with Chromium Browser VM. Every application within the VM is forced to use either Tor or OpenVPN, preventing side-channel attacks that could leak your real IP.
